Mimi Zieman MD

Mimi Zieman is a board-certified gynecologist, mother of three, women’s health advocate, and emerging creative writer living in Atlanta. After completing a residency in OB/GYN at Columbia, and a Fellowship in Family Planning at the University of California San Francisco, her medical career included many roles: associate professor, researcher, writer, editor, educator, speaker, auditor, advocate, executive, and consultant. She’s co-authored sixteen editions of Managing Contraception, with over one million books in circulation, has testified before the Georgia Legislature numerous times in support of women’s health rights, lectured nationally and internationally, and provided guidance to programs on a global scale.

This variety has served her itinerant nature perfectly. Born and raised in New York City, the daughter of refugees and a father who was a Holocaust survivor, she searched for who she was separate from this family identity, and backpacked solo in Nepal before the long haul of medical school. While trekking, she met Everest climbers who invited her to be the doctor on a later expedition. The problem was she’d only be a 25-year-old medical student at the planned time, and the expedition would be on the remote and treacherous East Face of Everest, climbed only once before. She decided to go anyway, the subject of her memoir in progress, which explores how her Everest journey connected her to the same rope of strength that saved her family. She believes there is great meaning to be found in facing fears and stretching outside of one’s comfort zone.

She loves to dance and hike, her family, animals, travel, and anything that challenges her to grow. These days, that’s studying the craft of writing.
